Where local conditions permit, members of the Cognitive Science Society around the world have been organizing meetup groups in conjunction with the virtual CogSci 2021 conference (shifted to an online format due to COVID). The goal is to facilitate interactions between cognitive scientists who live in the same city. Such meet-ups are being organized in Hong Kong, Melbourne, Boston, San Francisco, and Singapore. The Chicago-area meetup of the 2021 CogSci conference will be held Thursday, July 29, 3-6pm, location TBD
What: A 2-hour workshop for cognitive scientists followed by a happy hour at a nearby restaurant
Who: Anyone with an interest in Cognitive Science is welcome to attend, and registering for CogSci 2021 is not required. Students at all levels (e.g. undergraduates, honours students, and PhD students) and early career researchers are especially welcome and are encouraged to present their work. Industry researchers are also welcome.
When: Thursday, July 29, 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm workshop, happy hour right afterward
Where: Location TBD [ Pending final COVID protocol greenlight from the venue owners ]
Format: Our goal is to use most of the time for discussion and personal interaction.
3-4pm: round-table introductions and informal networking. Each attendee will have a chance to introduce themselves to their group and talk about their interests.
4-5pm: On the day each presenter might give a blitz-style reminder talk for 3 minutes, with plenty of time allocated for discussion. Recordings already prepared for a poster or oral presentation at CogSci 2021 or another conference (e.g. MathPsych/ICCM 2021 ) can also be shared. All recordings will be made available for viewing before the workshop. Giving a blitz-style talk without submitting a recorded presentation is also possible. [ I will bring a laptop and small beam projector so that we can project slides or even pre-recorded videos if desired ]
5-6pm: for the interested, group outing appetizers/drinks at any of the wonderful restaurants right in the area
Registration: Not required, but please RSVP to David Abugaber (dabuga2@uic.edu
) so that that we can get a rough head count in advance :)
COVID-19: The meetup will follow local guidelines for COVIDSafe events.
Code of Conduct: The meetup code of conduct is here.
